Product Description:
Green apophyllite is a striking mineral belonging to the apophyllite group, which includes hydrated potassium calcium silicate minerals. The green coloration is typically due to trace amounts of vanadium, iron, or other elemental inclusions. Crystals are most commonly found in well-formed, transparent to translucent tabular or prismatic shapes with a glassy to pearly luster.
Appearance
Green apophyllite crystals often display a pale to vibrant mint-green hue and are commonly found in association with other zeolite minerals such as stilbite or heulandite. They typically grow in clusters or as individual crystals on basalt matrix rock, and can exhibit impressive clarity, symmetry, and surface reflectivity.
Geological Formation
Green apophyllite forms in vesicles (gas cavities) of Deccan Traps basalt flows, a large igneous province in western India. These formations are the result of extensive volcanic activity around 66 million years ago. Over time, mineral-rich hydrothermal fluids filled the voids in the basalt, allowing apophyllite and associated zeolite minerals to crystallize slowly under low-temperature conditions.
Origin – Maharashtra, India
The state of Maharashtra, particularly regions like Pune, Nasik, Jalgaon, and Ahmednagar, is globally recognized for producing some of the finest apophyllite specimens. The quarries and road cuttings in this area have yielded well-crystallized, museum-grade green apophyllite over the years.
Uses
While not a gemstone, green apophyllite is prized by mineral collectors and museums for its aesthetic crystal habits and color. It is commonly used for display pieces and mineral education due to its excellent crystal structure and association with other visually appealing minerals.
