Product Description 

Libyan Desert Glass is a rare natural silica glass found in the eastern Sahara Desert near the Libya–Egypt border. It formed approximately 29 million years ago during the late Eocene epoch. Scientific studies suggest it was created when an intense meteorite impact or atmospheric airburst generated temperatures above 1,700°C, melting desert sand (nearly pure silica) into glass.

The material is composed of almost pure silicon dioxide (SiO₂), often exceeding 95–98% silica content, which gives it exceptional clarity and durability compared to many other natural glasses. Unlike volcanic glass (obsidian), Libyan Desert Glass is impact-related and not formed by volcanic activity.

Its color ranges from pale yellow to deep golden, sometimes containing natural bubbles or inclusions formed during rapid cooling. Each piece is naturally shaped by wind erosion over millions of years, making every specimen unique in form and texture.
